Whisked Up Water
We’re sharing worship this week with HERKIT – sorry, Kerith Church. The name comes from a rainy-season brook where Elijah was able to rest and be refreshed (see 1 Kings 17:2-6), as we all hope to be as we meet together this morning.
Here are a dozen other bodies of water mentioned in the Bible (in Bible order), but they have been whisked up a bit. Sort them out, maybe with the help of a Bible (NIV). You may like to read a bit more around the verses given.
| 1. SEEPUTHAR – a river watering the Garden of Eden… (Genesis 2:14) | |
| 2. SITRIG – …another one, same verse | |
| 3. LINE – a king’s daughter bathed there (Exodus 2:5) | |
| 4. AAABN – river in Damascus which Naaman would have preferred… | |
| 5. HARPRAP – …and another one (both 2 Kings 5:12) | |
| 6. DEARES – national rescue celebrated in Psalm 106:9 | |
| 7. DRJOAN – river where Jesus was baptised (Matthew 3:13) | |
| 8. ELEGAIL – sea or lake where the disciples were called (Matthew 4:18) | |
| 9. BESTHEAD – healing pool where Jesus cured an invalid (John 5:2) | |
| 10. IIBAREST – same lake as no.8, alternative name (John 6:1, 21:1) | |
| 11. CIRIDATA – sea where Paul was shipwrecked (Acts 27:27) | |
| 12. IFEATERFLOW – best river of all? (Revelation 22:1) |
Song Spot: Yet not I…
This song clearly has Galatians 2:20 in mind (look it up!). It talks about God’s love for us in Jesus. However, we are imperfect humans, and it’s only God’s work in us that enables us to respond, and his grace comes to us through our faith (“to this I hold”).
If you can, watch Laney on YouTube on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPqa_Xtd-eI. She gives a lovely account of the background to the song.
As for the tune, the way it leaps up high on “all is mine”, “overcome”, “I am free” and “shall repeat” is an inspired touch.
| What gift of grace is Jesus my redeemer. There is no more for heaven now to give. He is my joy, my righteousness, and freedom, My steadfast love, my deep and boundless peace. To this I hold, my hope is only Jesus, For my life is wholly bound to his. Oh how strange and divine, I can sing: all is mine! Yet not I, but through Christ in me. The night is dark but I am not forsaken, For by my side, the Saviour He will stay. I labour on in weakness and rejoicing, For in my need, His power is displayed. To this I hold, my Shepherd will defend me; Through the deepest valley He will lead. Oh the night has been won, and I shall overcome! Yet not I, but through Christ in me. | No fate I dread, I know I am forgiven; The future sure, the price it has been paid. For Jesus bled and suffered for my pardon, And He was raised to overthrow the grave. To this I hold, my sin has been defeated; Jesus now and ever is my plea. Oh the chains are released, I can sing: I am free! Yet not I, but through Christ in me. With every breath I long to follow Jesus, For He has said that He will bring me home; And day by day I know He will renew me, Until I stand with joy before the throne. To this I hold, my hope is only Jesus; All the glory evermore to Him. When the race is complete, still my lips shall repeat: Yet not I, but through Christ in me! Harvest: Thank you to everyone who brought in non-perishable goods: tins, packets, food, toiletries. By the time you read this, these will have gone to the Island Food Bank, along with money given for fresh produce.
Thank you also to all who have been bringing in, since July, fruit and vegetables to share.
Please continue to look out for people in our community who need help in any way, and pray for our response in sharing God’s love.
